Greetings, fans of the dramatic! Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Jessica, one of Janine's eldest students. Today I'll be giving you the 411 on what is going on with Drama Karma this term.
MID-YEAR CONCERT
It has been tradition in the past for all the students of Drama Karma to participate in the Lake Macquarie Speech and Drama Eisteddfod. It is a good experience for the kids to interact with students from other academies, and receive judging by trained professionals. However, there are some downsides to having this be the only outlet to perform. For one, all acts are under a strict time limit, where if you exceed your 5 minutes, you are no longer eligible for an award. Secondly, the audience of children and elders makes choosing pieces difficult, as it must be suitable for the whole family. Thirdly, the audience turnout may not be that good for the daytime segments. Finally, there are entry fees for every performance, so overachievers will be paying for a monologue, a duologue, and an improv, for example.
For these reasons, Janine came up with the idea that this year, the senior students would instead perform in a Drama Karma concert at the Dora Creek community hall, with the designation that it will be a mature event. The students will have the freedom to pick whatever pieces they want, regardless of language or themes. Children will therefore not be accepted into the venue. The estimated date for this event will be the end of Term 2. Stay tuned for more info.
CLASS FEES
It has become necessary for Janine to implement a payment structure more aligned with what other drama and dance schools offer, wherein the students will be required to pay the fee of any missed lessons. More information on this will be coming soon in a newsletter. We appreciate your understanding regarding this difficult decision.
HELP DRAMA KARMA OUT!
We would love to see an increase in new students for Drama Karma. I know from anecdotes of friends and family that not many people are even aware that Drama Karma exists, so if you could bring it up when you come across parents needing an after-school activity for their young'uns, or any particularly creative students who want to expand their theatre skills, or young adults that feel like there aren't a lot of clubs that accommodate their age group. Speaking as a 24 year old (25 in June), I have never felt out of place in the seniors class, and have made some great friendships there.
This is shaping up to be a great term for Drama Karma!
Thank you for reading,
xx Jess
